Tanzania cultural tours add a human story to your wildlife adventure. Tanzania is home to more than 120 ethnic groups, and visiting local communities with a respectful guide is one of the most rewarding parts of any trip. The tours above can be enjoyed as day trips or added to a safari itinerary.

Maasai village visits. On the way to the Ngorongoro Crater or the Serengeti, you can visit a Maasai boma, learn how families live with their cattle, see traditional homes and enjoy songs and dances. Entrance fees support the community.
Hadzabe and Datoga near Lake Eyasi. Join one of Africa’s last hunter-gatherer communities for an early-morning walk, and visit Datoga blacksmiths who make arrowheads and jewellery from recycled metal.
Chagga culture and coffee on Kilimanjaro. Near Moshi, Chagga families welcome visitors to their farms to roast, grind and taste coffee, visit historic underground tunnels and walk to the Materuni waterfalls.
Mto wa Mbu village walk. Close to Lake Manyara, this lively market town is home to people from many different tribes. A guided walk takes you through banana plantations, rice fields, local workshops and the busy market.
Stone Town, Zanzibar. A walking tour of the historic old town reveals Swahili, Arab, Indian and European influences, carved wooden doors, spice markets and stories of the island’s past.
We believe Tanzania cultural tours should benefit the people you visit. We work with community-run projects where possible, encourage guests to ask before taking photos, and explain local customs before each visit so you feel comfortable and welcome.
Culture in Tanzania is also something you can taste and hear. Try a cooking class in a family kitchen and learn to make pilau, chapati or ugali with fresh vegetables from the garden. Listen to traditional drumming and dance, watch local artists paint colourful Tingatinga pictures, or meet women’s groups who create beadwork and baskets. Buying directly from the makers is a simple way to support families and take home a meaningful souvenir.
Dress modestly, especially in villages and in Zanzibar’s Stone Town, with shoulders and knees covered. Bring small notes in Tanzanian shillings for handicrafts, comfortable shoes and an open mind. A few words of Swahili, such as “jambo” (hello) and “asante” (thank you), are always appreciated.
Most Tanzania cultural tours fit easily into a safari route. A Maasai visit pairs well with the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Eyasi is a short drive from Karatu, and Chagga coffee tours are perfect before or after a climb.
