Kilimanjaro Climbing Tours and Mountain Treks

Kilimanjaro climbing tours give you the chance to stand on the Roof of Africa. At 5,895 metres, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, yet no technical climbing skills are needed to reach the summit. Browse the treks above, including Mount Meru, or ask us to tailor a climb for you.

Choosing a Route for Kilimanjaro Climbing Tours

Machame is one of the most popular routes, with varied scenery and good acclimatisation over six or seven days. Lemosho starts in the remote west, is quieter and very scenic, and usually takes seven or eight days. Marangu is the only route with hut accommodation. Rongai approaches from the north near the Kenyan border, is drier and less crowded, and is a good choice in the rainy months.

Why the Number of Days Matters

Altitude, not fitness, is the biggest challenge on Kilimanjaro. Longer itineraries give your body more time to adjust and greatly improve your chances of reaching the summit safely. We usually recommend at least seven days on the mountain, following the “climb high, sleep low” principle.

Best Time to Climb

The best months for Kilimanjaro climbing tours are January to early March and June to October, when the weather is driest. Full-moon summit nights are especially popular. Climbing is possible in other months, but expect more rain and cloud.

What Is Included

Kilimanjaro climbs normally include park fees, a professional mountain guide team, porters, a cook, camping or hut accommodation, meals on the mountain and transfers to and from the gate. Your quote will list exactly what is included, and we can help arrange equipment hire if needed.

How to Prepare

Start training two to three months before your trip with long walks, hikes on hills and stairs, and some cardio such as cycling or swimming. Break in your boots well before you travel. On the mountain, walk slowly (“pole pole” in Swahili), drink plenty of water, eat well even when you are not hungry, and tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell. Comprehensive travel insurance that covers trekking to 6,000 metres and emergency evacuation is essential for all Kilimanjaro climbing tours.

Mount Meru – The Perfect Warm-Up

Mount Meru in Arusha National Park rises to 4,566 metres and makes an excellent acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro. Over three or four days you pass giraffes and buffaloes in the forest before reaching a dramatic crater rim with views across to Kilimanjaro.
