Tanzania Hiking Tours Beyond Kilimanjaro

Tanzania hiking tours are a wonderful way to experience the country on foot. While Kilimanjaro gets most of the attention, Tanzania also offers crater rim walks, volcano climbs, rainforest trails, waterfalls and village paths through coffee and banana farms. The trips above can be booked on their own or added to a safari.

Tanzania hiking tours – walking group on the Ngorongoro highlands

Popular Tanzania Hiking Tours

Ngorongoro Highlands and Empakaai Crater. Walk through highland forest and open grassland with Maasai herders, then hike down to the soda lake inside Empakaai Crater, often dotted with flamingos. An armed ranger accompanies walks in the conservation area.

Ol Doinyo Lengai. The “Mountain of God” near Lake Natron is an active volcano. The night climb is steep and demanding, but sunrise from the summit over the Rift Valley is unforgettable.

Mount Meru. Tanzania’s second-highest mountain rises inside Arusha National Park. The three- or four-day trek passes giraffe and buffalo on the lower slopes and is excellent acclimatisation before Kilimanjaro.

Materuni Waterfalls and coffee tours. On the slopes of Kilimanjaro near Moshi, a short hike leads to a tall waterfall, followed by a hands-on Chagga coffee experience.

Usambara Mountains. Green hills, cool air, viewpoints and friendly villages make the Usambaras perfect for multi-day walking between guesthouses.

How Fit Do You Need to Be?

Most Tanzania hiking tours suit anyone with reasonable fitness who enjoys walking for three to six hours. Volcano climbs such as Ol Doinyo Lengai and Mount Meru are more challenging and require good stamina. Our team will help you choose a hike that matches your experience.

Best Time for Tanzania Hiking Tours

The driest months are June to October and late December to February, when trails are firm and views are clear. Hiking is still possible in the green season, but expect mud and afternoon showers. See our guide to the best time to visit Tanzania for more detail.

Guides and Safety

All of our walks are led by experienced local guides who know the trails, the weather and the wildlife. In national parks and conservation areas, an armed ranger joins walks where required by park rules. Group sizes are kept small, the pace is set by the slowest walker, and there is always time to stop for photos, snacks and conversations with the people you meet along the way.

What to Bring

Pack broken-in hiking boots, a light rain jacket, warm layers for early starts, a sun hat, sunscreen, at least two litres of water and a small daypack. For overnight treks we will send a detailed packing list.

Combine Hiking With a Safari

Tanzania hiking tours combine perfectly with game drives. Many guests walk the Ngorongoro highlands before driving into the crater, or climb Mount Meru before a Tanzania safari. If you want a bigger challenge, explore our Kilimanjaro climbing tours.
