Serengeti Wildebeest Migration – The Greatest Show on Earth

Step into the heart of Africa and witness the world’s greatest wildlife spectacle – the Serengeti Wildebeest Migration. Each year, more than two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles thunder across the vast plains of the Serengeti, driven by the timeless rhythm of nature.

It is a story of life and survival, of new beginnings and dramatic river crossings. From the wide open southern plains to the crocodile-infested rivers of the north, the migration is a breathtaking journey that defines the very essence of the African wilderness.

Where to Experience the Migration

The migration is not a single event, but a year-round cycle. Wherever you travel, the herds are always on the move – you just need to know where to look. From the calving grounds in Ndutu, to the perilous Grumeti River, and finally the legendary Mara River crossings, every stage offers an unforgettable safari moment.

The Migration Journey Through the Year

==> November – December
With the short rains, the southern Serengeti transforms into lush green grasslands. The herds return to Ndutu and the plains near Seronera, preparing for the season of new life.

==> January – March
Calving season. From late January through February, more than 400,000 calves are born – nearly 8,000 every day. The plains become a giant nursery, magical yet dangerous, as predators take advantage of the abundance.

==> April – May
The long trek north begins. Thousands of wildebeest and zebras move together in endless columns, searching for water and fresh pastures.

==> June
The herds reach the Grumeti River in the Western Corridor. Crocodiles lie in wait beneath the waters. Crossings here are dramatic, though smaller than those at the Mara.

==> July – August
The migration pushes north, spreading across wide areas of the Serengeti. This is peak safari season, offering some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities on earth.

==> September – Early October
The drama peaks at the Mara River. Thousands of wildebeest leap into swirling waters, battling crocodiles and strong currents. Witnessing a Mara crossing is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

==> Late October
As the short rains return, the herds begin moving south through Lobo and Loliondo, back to the Serengeti’s short-grass plains. The cycle begins again.
