A practical introduction to southern Tanzania's wild parks, covering Nyerere, Ruaha and Mikumi, how to reach them and when each one shines.

Southern Tanzania offers a very different safari from the famous northern circuit. Distances are larger, vehicles fewer and the landscapes wilder, with big rivers, miombo woodland and rugged hills. For travelers who value a sense of remoteness, it is one of the most rewarding regions in Africa.
At Ndovu African Expeditions we plan southern safaris for first-time visitors seeking something quieter and for returning guests who have already explored the north. Here is how the three main parks compare.
Quick tips
- Travel in the dry season for the best game viewing in the south.
- Check camp opening dates if traveling between March and May.
- Pack soft-sided bags for light aircraft flights.
- Spend at least three nights per park to offset travel time.
- Ask about walking and boat options when choosing a camp.
Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park was created in 2019 from the northern part of the vast Selous Game Reserve. The Rufiji River and its network of lakes and channels define the park, supporting hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, lions and an important population of African wild dogs.
What sets Nyerere apart is variety of activity. Depending on your camp, you can combine game drives with boat safaris and guided walks, giving you a richer view of the ecosystem than vehicles alone allow.
Ruaha National Park
Ruaha is one of Tanzania's largest parks and arguably its wildest. The Great Ruaha River cuts through a landscape of baobabs, rocky hills and dry woodland where transition zones bring together species from east and southern Africa, including greater and lesser kudu and, with luck, sable and roan antelope.
Ruaha is known for big lion prides and large elephant numbers. Camps are spread widely, and it is common to drive for long stretches without seeing another vehicle.
Mikumi National Park
Mikumi is the most accessible southern park, reachable by road from Dar es Salaam in a long half-day. The open Mkata floodplain resembles a small Serengeti, with zebra, buffalo, giraffe, elephants and lions.
A main highway crosses the park, so Mikumi is less remote in feel, but it suits shorter trips and travelers who prefer to avoid flying. It also works as a stop between Dar es Salaam and Ruaha.
When to go
The dry season, roughly June to October, is prime time in the south. Vegetation thins, animals concentrate near water and roads are in good shape. The short rains, roughly November to December, bring greenery and newborn animals.
During the long rains, roughly March to May, many southern camps close and some roads become impassable. If you are considering those months, talk with us early about which properties remain open.
Getting there and combining parks
Most visitors fly in on scheduled light aircraft from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar or Arusha, landing at airstrips close to their camps. Road access is possible, particularly to Mikumi and Nyerere, but distances are significant.
A classic plan pairs Nyerere for water-based activities with Ruaha for raw wilderness, then finishes on a Zanzibar beach. Allow at least three nights in each park to justify the travel.
Because southern camps tend to be small and spread out, availability in the peak dry months can be limited. Planning several months ahead gives you the widest choice of riverside camps, walking specialists and properties with boat access.
- Nyerere plus Ruaha for contrast
- Mikumi as a road-based short safari
- Southern parks combined with Zanzibar
Frequently asked questions
Is Nyerere the same as the Selous?
Nyerere National Park was formed in 2019 from the northern section of the former Selous Game Reserve, which is where most photographic safaris took place. The remaining Selous areas are managed separately.
Is southern Tanzania good for a first safari?
Yes, especially for travelers who prefer fewer vehicles and a wilder atmosphere. The north has denser wildlife in places, so we help you weigh the two based on your priorities.
Can we combine the north and south in one trip?
It is possible using domestic flights. It works best on longer trips, so we can suggest routes that balance variety with reasonable travel time.
