Dar es Salaam is a lively, welcoming city, and a few street-smart habits help you enjoy it while avoiding the petty crime common in any big port.

Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's largest city and its commercial heart, a hot, busy port full of markets, seafood, Swahili architecture and friendly people. Many visitors pass through only briefly, landing at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) before heading to Zanzibar or a southern safari in Nyerere, Mikumi or Ruaha.
Most stays are trouble-free. Like large cities worldwide, though, Dar has opportunistic theft, especially bag snatching and pickpocketing in crowded areas. These tips come from our experience moving guests through the city.
Quick tips
- Use hotel-booked taxis or a ride-hailing app instead of street cars.
- Keep bags on the side away from the road while walking.
- Buy Zanzibar ferry tickets only from official offices inside the terminal.
- Take a taxi after dark, even for short trips.
- Leave passports and spare cash in your hotel safe.
Getting around safely
Use a taxi booked through your hotel or a ride-hailing app rather than flagging down unmarked cars in the street. Note the driver and vehicle details before you get in, and agree the fare in advance if there is no meter or app.
Motorbike taxis, known as boda bodas, and three-wheeled bajaji are everywhere and cheap, but accident rates are high and helmets are not always offered. We advise visitors to avoid them, especially with luggage.
Avoiding bag snatching and pickpockets
The most common problem for visitors is theft from people walking beside busy roads. Thieves on motorbikes may grab a bag or phone and speed off. Carry bags on the side away from traffic, keep phones out of sight while walking, and do not wear flashy jewelry.
Crowded places such as Kariakoo Market, bus stations and the city center are great to experience, but they suit going with a local guide and leaving valuables at the hotel.
- Carry only the cash you need for the day
- Use a cross-body bag that closes securely
- Keep your phone in a front pocket or zipped bag
- Be cautious with strangers who strike up conversations and offer help unprompted
The Zanzibar ferry terminal
If you take the ferry to Zanzibar, expect touts outside the terminal offering tickets, porter services or help with luggage. Buy tickets only from the official ticket offices of the ferry companies, inside the terminal, or ask us to arrange them in advance. Keep a close eye on your bags in the crowds, and do not hand luggage to anyone who has not been clearly identified as an official porter.
Choosing where to stay and after dark
Many visitors base themselves in the Msasani Peninsula, Oyster Bay or Masaki, which have a good choice of hotels and restaurants. Wherever you stay, take a taxi at night rather than walking, even short distances, and avoid isolated beaches and quiet streets after dark.
Beaches near the city can be pleasant during the day, but go with others and leave valuables behind. Ask your hotel reception about any areas they suggest avoiding, as local advice is the most current.
If something goes wrong
Hand over belongings without resistance if confronted; nothing you carry is worth an injury. Report theft to the nearest police station and ask for a written report, which your insurer will need. If your passport is taken, contact your embassy or high commission in Dar es Salaam. Our team can also help with practical support if you are traveling with Ndovu African Expeditions.
